Q3

Our very special Guest this week is:

DAMIEN CARNEY; International Artistic Director

1. WHICH BEAUTY MAGAZINE INSPIRES YOU AND WHY?

It’s hard to say just one magazine, but if I have to choose one………

I really like “V” magazine

I love the format and size super big, visual, colorful. It’s a happy, cheerful magazine. Full of brilliant images.

I like the content as its mixed, models, fashion, interviews. A mixture of all the arts. Always fresh and never safe.

The editorials are very inspiring. They trigger ideas, concepts and creative thoughts that can be translated to our hair world. It’s important to stretch the imagination and escape the routine of every day life. Push ideas, methods, techniques, etc.

You can get inspired in many ways. Strong concepts can be diluted and weaker concepts can be strengthened. It’s all about perspective and how you you look a things. I collect a lot of fashion magazines. I use them as reference, I can look a magazine one day and see nothing. I can look at the same magazine again and see something completely different. Creativity should never be forced, it comes and goes. When your feeling inspired run with it!

2. IF YOU COULD HAVE A COUTURE GOWN CUSTOM MADE, WHICH DESIGNER WOULD YOU CHOSE AND WHY?

John Galliano with out  a doubt. Over the top, what he creates is as beautiful crafted on the inside as the outside. Your wearing a one off unique JG out fit.  John vision and understanding of craftsman ship and creativity is perfectly mixed and esthetically balanced,  that is really quite rare. John has his unique look and vision – when you see his work you know it’s clearly johns.

Dior is not the same, the fashion world is not the same with out John. He’s a genius in the world of fashion, over the top, simply Divine.

John could craft anything amazing from simple fabric. He’s a visionary, an Icon, there’s only one Galliano!

3. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE “MUSICAL” MOVIE AND WHY?

The Wizard Of Oz

The story, the characters, the clothes, the color, everything. A musical a head of it’s time. A musical, movie that everyone can enjoy. I’m off to see the wizard…..  happy times, happy tunes…………..

Thank you to Damien for such informative & well thought out replies, how fantastic to have an opportunity to his insight!!

“THE MAN WHO CHANGED THE WORLD WITH A PAIR OF SCISSORS!!”

As the Creative Directors of Emiliani, we wondered where we could possibly start with this, very special blog??

The decision was to start with Vidal’s final interview….

Filmed exclusively by Valentino LaRosa for Emiliani. The video shows Vidal ‘embracing’ the 4th Dimension Hair Show in Atlantic City, April 2012, a mere 3 weeks before his passing.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=djVCSeM4f9E

Hopefully you will feel what we did! Passion and a wonderful LOVE for our craft. When we witnessed the video for the first time, we said nothing to each other the whole way through, such was Vidal’s magnetic power. This never changed throughout his life. We were very fortunate to be in Vidal’s company on many occasions & always felt his presence. many former team members have shared wonderful memories, all pointing to the magnitude of the man & what he achieved.

Somehow, we feel it would almost be impossible to do justice to the life of VIDAL SASSOON, in a few words in the blog. What we thought would be interesting from our viewpoint, is to share some great links, a mix of fun, culture a& vision, all of the components that made VIDAL the “GREATEST” known hairdresser in history.

This weeks company featured is: SEXY HAIR

The guest artists for Runway ‘V’ are Lonn Bogart Jr, Ian Browning & Faye Judson.

Lonn Bogart Jr.

Lonn Bogart’s passion for the beauty industry is undeniable. Being a stylist has given him the opportunity to unleash his creative side. Designing hair has served as a creative outlet for expressing both his talent and skills.

Three years ago, he was recruited to be a mentor/instructor at Sexy Hair’s award-winning Institute of Courage in Los Angeles. Today, Bogart takes pleasure in knowing that he is helping other artists grow and learn.

“You are never too old to learn something new,” says Bogart. Whether it’s styling, teaching or living – he takes great pleasure in teaching what he knows and learning from those around him.

“I am the luckiest person to be able to do what I love and to be able to share it with others who are just as passionate about it as I am. It is truly an amazing experience and I am grateful for the opportunity.”

Ian Browning.

Browning got into the hair industry while waiting to go to Navy boot camp, sweeping up hair at a salon for extra money. “I bailed on the Navy and started beauty school because hairdressing looked like fun,” he says.

He started at Sexy Hair in 2000 and became Sexy Hair’s 2009 Master Artist of the Year. Known for his strong sense of street style, Browning represents Sexy Hair internationally, sees clients at Salon Lujon in Fullerton, CA, and is equally at home doing hair on fashion runways and for prestigious publications including Allure and Cosmopolitan.

In regard to doing hair, it’s all “hands on deck” for the Browning family. His wife of 12 years is a hairdresser and so is his 20-year old daughter. Even his 3-year old son looks like he has a calling for the profession.  He chuckles as he recalls his son imitating his moves as he cuts doll heads.

His proudest hair moment? “When my daughter passed the state cosmetology boards and became part of our amazing hairdressing family.”

Faye Judson.

Inspired. Energetic.  Determined. Passionate.  These are the words that best describe Faye Judson. The fiery Sexy Hair Master Artist has been in the beauty industry for over 16 years and has built a solid reputation on the ability to make people feel good on the inside as well as look good on the outside.

“I got into this industry because I love everything about it” said Judson. “I love to inspire those around me and keep them motivated to do and be the best.”

As most stylists, Faye was first introduced to Sexy Hair through its products. “I tried Big Sexy Hair, Spray & Play and I was hooked,” recalls Judson. She then saw Michael O’Rourke and his team at a hair show and knew she wanted to be a part of it. Judson recalls that the company’s signature cutting method Structure in Motion fascinated her and she loved the styling products.

Fast forward a few years and Judson is not only a part of the company’s elite team of Master Artists, but she also received the company’s 2009 Master Artist of the Year award. Her favorite is the Big Sexy Hair Volumizing Dry Shampoo. She says, “that she can’t do hair without it.”

“Being a part of something that gives back means a lot to me,” adds Judson.  “Everyone should look and feel Sexy!

The featured product from SEXY HAIR is Activating Scalp Care.

Activating Scalp Treatment is a liquid treatment with a targeted applicator to address the needs of fine and/or thinning hair by stimulating microcirculation at the scalp to visibly strengthen and increase the thickness of hair.

Activating Scalp Treatment may be an unusual product for Sexy Hair to be associated with, however without hair, individuals have a difficult time to bringing out the sexiness within their hair!!

Our regular feature to the blog Q3 !! Each week we will invite someone in the industry, local, national and international, to answer 3 questions, relating to the hair industry. If there is any particular hairdresser you would like us to “Q3″, please leave a comment and we will look to feature your requested artist. We hope you will enjoy this unique feature.

THIS WEEK WE ARE BRINGING THREE Q3 !!

THE THREE MAIN STAGE ARTISTS FOR SEXY HAIR, LONN, IAN & FAYE!!

Our questions will vary as we receive responses from the Main Stage Artists taking part at the Emiliani Expo, it will give an interesting insight to the Artists & we are sure you will enjoy reading the replies.

Q3.

Our first guest is: Lonn Bogart Jr;

Hair Stylist & Platform Artist for Sexy Hair.

1. WHO IS YOUR BIGGEST INFLUENCE IN THE FASHION WORLD AND WHY?

Honestly, Stacy and Clinton from “What not to Wear”. Their advice to dress for your shape and body goes along with my thought process of how I design hair for a client.

2. WHAT IS INSPIRING YOU RIGHT NOW IN THE HAIR INDUSTRY?

I personally don’t follow trends, I find them one note. I let my clients inspire me. I get to know their inner personality and I design color and cut for them  to bring out their inner personality.

  1. WHICH HAIRDRESSER WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO WORK WITH?

(past or present)

George Masters, the man had a strong attitude and personality.

Thank you to Lonn, for some honest hair related replies.

_______________________________________________________

Our second guest is: Ian Browning;

Platform Artist for Sexy Hair

Q3.

1. WHICH BEAUTY MAGAZINE INSPIRES YOU AND WHY?

My favorite mag is by far Estetica it is the most well rounded pure mag I believe in the beauty industry today, it only shows progressive well rounded hair, better then any other publication out there, and of course behind the chair.com is a close second

2. IF YOU COULD HAVE A COUTURE GOWN CUSTOM MADE, WHICH DESIGNER WOULD YOU CHOSE AND WHY?

If I had no limitations Alexander McQueen would be the one I choose… but Givenchy, Vera Wang and of course Betsy Johnson are what I would choose for the everyday women, all of which show amazing style.

3. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE “MUSICAL” MOVIE AND WHY?

This is a hard question I sang my whole life and Les Miserable was by far my favorite musical of all time the style is defiantly Bohemia and real but as far as modern musical Movies Steven Sondheim’s “Sweeney Todd” was amazing, great hair with a demonic twist, it rocked!!!!

Thank you to Ian, for his an insight to his personal inspirations.

_______________________________________________________

Our third guest is: Faye Judson;

International Master Artist Sexy Hair & Salon Owner.

1. WHAT IS INSPIRING YOU RIGHT NOW IN THE HAIR INDUSTRY?

WHICH FASHION DESIGNER DO YOU ADMIRE THE MOST AND WHY?

I have always said to myself, surround yourself with people that are better than you.  I have always loved Vidal Sassoon looks, they have inspired me to be very creative.  I love the classic lines and geometric shapes blended with soft rounded layers create beautiful hair designs.  I have been an International Master Artist with Sexy Hair for 10 years. In 2009,  I was Master Artist of the Year. I believe that having a good understanding of what the head shape can do for you in your hair design is very important.  Connecting with a Manufacturer like “Sexy Hair” has given me a lot of opportunities to grow and to make money doing what I love to do and that’s hair.

  1. WHICH BEAUTY MAGAZINE INSPIRES YOU AND WHY?

I read American Salon, Modern Salon, Behind The Chair and the I love the fashion that I see in People. I feel that when you connect with your client on a level that they are comfortable with they will trust you and seek your opinion for their hair needs.

3. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE “MUSICAL” MOVIE AND WHY?

I have always loved the musical the “Wizard of Oz”. It was my favorite growing up and loved the music and the colors that made it magical. It took dull and boring to bright and colorful. Transforming the characters  from country bumpkin to glamour in the city, but at the end always knowing where your heart is and what you believe in.

Thank you to Faye, incredible driving force in the hair industry.

Who will be next weeks Q3?

RUNWAY ‘V’ COUNTDOWN 6 weeks to go!!

“FASHION ISSUE”

Building on our theme for this years Emiliani Expo, RUNWAY ‘V’, where for the first time the “5” elements of the beauty industry are brought together at the same time, to be highlighted & recognized as a fusion of talent.

This week we are focusing on FASHION:

There is no doubt that Hair & Fashion are totally linked!! Fashion is very much like Hair, Global in it’s appeal. Hair has generally played the part of supporting role to the Fashion industry historically.

Runway ‘V’ is going a long way to change this & make it part of history, by having the individual elements RESPECT each other.

Will this become the NEW?

Can each of the elements fuse together to become one?

Look for the quote later in this blog!

Wether you are a dedicated follower of fashion or an occasional fashion buyer, there is reason to believe Fashion plays a part in most of  our lives. High-end, low-end, casual, sports, leisure and so on….

When Hairdressers are looking to create new hair photographic collections, it is likely much collaborating is done with fashion designers. So vital in achieving the TOTAL look.

The excitement is building for the 2012 Emiliani Expo in October with the inclusion of 5 top Fashion Designers, working with the Hair Stylists to bring live versions of the Total Look.

We are thrilled to feature the delightful SIMONE RODRIGUES, also know by her brand SISA.

We had a very informative, informal and unplugged get together with Simone.

Please enjoy a short video interview with Simone, as she gives an insight into her vision and Runway ‘V’.

THIS WEEK WE ARE BRINGING TWO Q3 !!

ONE OF THE MAIN STAGE ARTISTS FOR FRAMESI, BOYD PARRIS,

AND FASHION DESIGNER SIMONE RODRIGUES!!

Our questions will vary as we receive responses from the Main Stage Artists taking part at the Emiliani Expo, it will give an interesting insight to the Artists & we are sure you will enjoy reading the replies.

Q3.

This weeks guest is: Boyd Parris;

Creative Force for Framesi.

1. WHO IS YOUR BIGGEST INFLUENCE IN THE FASHION WORLD AND WHY?

That’s a really tough question to answer… it’s more often about relationships and collaboration than a single person. My favorite collaboration….Ohne Titel by Juergen Teller, Cindy Sherman and Marc Jacobs. My favorite relationship… Sarah Burton and Alexander McQueen.

At first glance it appears to be the work of an individual. It’s fluid.

2. WHAT IS INSPIRING YOU RIGHT NOW IN THE HAIR INDUSTRY?

Color Blocking. It’s a great way to generate added revenue behind the chair. Depending on your choice of level and shade the results can be bold or subtle. Blocking larger sections can really signature a haircut and enhance facial features. Using Framcolor Glamour keeps it simple and creative, I can use the same formula root to ends.

3. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE “MUSICAL” MOVIE AND WHY?

CHICAGO…. Renee Zellweger was the perfect Roxie and Christine Baranski a perfect Mary Sunshine. Great hair, great make up, great casting.

http://www.framesi.it/en/

Thank you to Boyd, for some engaging replies.

Our second guest is: Simone Rodrigues;

Fashion Designer

Q3.

  1. WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST ACHIEVEMENT?

Seeing my line worn by many women, of all sizes & race, also having it in high end stores.

  1. WHO HAS BEEN YOUR INSPIRATION?

My Mom!!! Continuing my mothers dream to be a top designer, something she was not able to fulfill. I am realizing it!! Valentino is my design inspiration, classic, elegant & sophisticated. I have taken those elements & translated them into my vision being, all about NATURE.

  1. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE AN ASPIRING DESIGNER?

To be who you are without following trend!! Create your own to be unique. People are looking for something individual to give them the WOW factor. Look to keep it exciting! Step out of the box.

Thank you to Simone, for bringing reality & passion.

Who will be next weeks Q3?

This weeks guest is: Mark Kuzma; Owner/Artist Director

of Laboratory, Morristown, NJ.

  1. WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST ACHIEVEMENT?

My proudest achievement has to be styling for New York Fashion Week. This will be my fourth year and every time I am amazed and inspired by all of the creative people that are involved in each show.

  1. WHICH HAIRDRESSER WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO WORK WITH (past or present)?

I would love to have been able to work with Vidal Sassoon. The strong geometrical shapes are just so unreal.

  1. WHAT IS THE BEST ADVICE YOU WOULD GIVE A YOUNG HAIRDRESSER?

The best advice I could give a young stylist would be to constantly try to improve your skills through training classes. They should seek out salons that have an education first environment both in house and outside of the salon.

WINNING & THE SOCIAL MEDIA

Social Media, the Evolving Marketplace!

Winning! As we all know, is a joy, to win something creates great positivity, from a drink or food item to the lottery!!  We also believe that the same positive effect triggers, when we watch our favorite athlete win a medal at the Olympics or our most admired hairdresser win a NAHA.

Our theme this week focusses on the “POSITIVE NATURE” of winning through the Social Media network. The main components we are highlighting are Facebook and Twitter.

Emiliani utilizes these amazing tools to market, promote and communicate with you, the Hair Professional. The impact of Social Media is dynamic, to give one description, it is the “NOW”.

Facebook is such an amazing medium for connecting the Past, Present and the Future. There are some wonderful archive posts giving an insight to the vast history of the Hair Industry. Then you have “on the moment” postings, especially Tweets on Twitter, featuring events as they are happening, stylists posting their hair images or video’s. Finally what a networking arena for Future events and happenings. It is great the way the Professional Hair Industry has embraced the Facebook & Twitter revolution.

Recently Emiliani hosted a competition on Facebook, for a Salon to have the chance to “WIN” an Educational Hair class of their choice with Emiliani’s Creative Directors!!! (Us!!) This gives us a wonderful opportunity to prove that somebody does “WIN” these competitions!!

Moda 330 are actively involved with Facebook, Twitter & have their own blog linked to the salon website, here is some of their report from the winning salon experience:

WINNER: MODA 330, RAHWAY NJ.

Moda 330 the Salon is the proud winner of Emiliani’s first Facebook contest hosted by the world-renowned stylists Brian Grieve and Tracey Smith from the United Kingdom.

“Brian and Tracey are two of my idols in the hair industry. It was so nice to be the winning salon of the Emiliani Facebook contest. We were learning from the best in the business,” said salon owner Tina Jimenez.  Brian and Tracey talked to the Moda staff about what it takes to be the best and what one has to do to accomplish greatness. Brian and Tracey shared on how they learned from and respected, the late Vidal Sassoon and how the styles of Nicholas French are second to none.

The staff at the salon sent Emiliani pictures of two specific hair styles they wanted to learn more about. During the visit, the creative directors instructed, demonstrated and educated the staff on the styles while walking them through the process step by step. In addition, the prestigious couple from the U.K. demonstrated and explained why proper positioning of the body and fingers during a cut/style, including finger angles and shoulder placement, is extremely important.  What was most impressive to the Moda girls was the energy and inspiration the insightful duo brought to the class. They were upbeat and eager to share their knowledge and experiences.

Tina appreciates Brian and Tracey’s efforts to help her salon reach new heights. In order to become a mainstay in the industry she and her staff of highly talented stylists persistently look to expand their knowledge of ever-changing trends and demands.

Brian & Tracey sharing the techniques.

To read the full blog & more images go to:

http://moda330.com/

It was a team which were able to bring together the components which made the winning salon a success, Ralph Candelieri, the District Sales Consultant spoke of his delight too!

“I can share how this whole processes was sweet! From the salon entering on line to the owner being contacted and for me being involved in the whole thing. I am still very motivated from it.

As far as the salon, what can I say when Emiliani’s Artistic Directors called and ask what type of education is the salon interested in, they wanted their entire portfolio!! Needless to say they’ve been in their element like never before. Thanks to Brian and Tracey, the salon, was on a trip, never experienced before, from computerizing the salon and creating their own classic salon collection and Trends.

Thank you again”

Q3.

This weeks guest is: Tina Jimenez

Stylist & Owner of Moda 330 the Salon, Rahway NJ.

1.  WHICH HAIRDRESSER WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO WORK WITH & WHY?

There are so many people I look up to but I have always said Brian Grieve and Tracey Smith are my idols in the hair industry for cutting and Nicholas French for inspiration for up styling. Brian and Tracey make cutting look like an art not a job and they are truly a motivating couple. Nicholas always allows me to bring out my creative side in my up styles.

2.  WHAT IS ONE THING IN THE INDUSTRY THAT MAKES YOU MAD?

The one thing in the industry that makes me mad are stylists who don’t want to change. In this industry things change daily and if we don’t further our education we get lost and it sets us behind. If you have a passion for hair you have to be willing to change and grow with the times.

3.  WHAT IS YOUR GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT?

Seven years ago I would have said my greatest achievement was opening my own salon. Now since I have been open for seven years my greatest achievement is getting the salon to the next level. Putting Moda 330 on the hair map. There are 15,000 or more salons in New Jersey alone and I want people to know us and our talent. I love to hear each day how that is happening.

Thank you to Tina, a great inspirational hairdresser & great forward vision.

A fantastic example of building on “WIN” brings “POSITIVE NATURE”.

Who will be next weeks Q3?

If there is any particular hairdresser you would like us to “Q3″, please leave a comment and we will look to feature your requested artist. We hope you will enjoy this unique feature.

Q3.

This weeks guest is:

Emilie Forcellina stylist, make-up artist, and owner of Stylin’ Norwalk, CT

1.WHO IS YOUR HAIRDRESSING IDOL AND WHY?

I would have to say my hairdressing idol is Michael O’Rourke. Not only because is he an amazingly talented hairdresser, but his story of personal triumph and success inspires me everyday. He LOVES this industry and continues to be active in motivating hairdressers all over the world.

2. IF YOU WEREN’T A HAIRDRESSER, WHAT WOULD YOU BE?

This is a tough question, because I love what I do, but I would definitely be doing something in a creative field, something “out of the box” where I could still be my own boss. Possibly graphic arts or making jewelry.

3. WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST ACHIEVEMENT?

My proudest achievement in life SO FAR has been opening my salon, I was 24 years old and full of dreams. Since then, with the help of my unbelievably supportive family, friends, and especially my co-workers, I have had the pleasure of watching it grow, and thrive. I am SO thankful everyday.

Thank you to Emilie, a truly dedicated hairdresser to the professional industry.
